Over the past 12 months, Louis Berger has significantly extended its portfolio of work across the transportation and institutional development sectors in the Newly Independent States (NIS). The expansion is in part driven by a strong focus within NIS countries to eliminate barriers to inter-regional and intra-regional trade, improve the overall competitiveness of national economies through regulatory reform, and spur greater growth.
A sample of recent new business wins in the NIS region follows:
- In Azerbaijan, Louis Berger is supporting ongoing road sector institutional reform by helping policymakers gradually open the sector to greater private sector participation. The firm also has been selected by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to update the Azerbaijan Road Sector Master Plan.
- In Moldova, Louis Berger is delivering project management and construction supervision services for major road upgrades, including the R14 Balti–Sarateni, which is part of two primary routes between Chisinau and Balti, the two largest cities in Moldova, and the R16 Balti-Falesti–Sculeni, which will connect Balti to the Romanian border and European Union markets.
- In Tajikistan, the firm is assisting the Ministry of Transport to procure road maintenance equipment using the proceeds of a loan administered through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Louis Berger also is working with Khujand International Airport to provide improved airfield lighting and equipment, including new instrumented landing systems.
- In Ukraine, Louis Berger is assisting with the modernization of a 28.6-kilometer (approximately 18 mile) section of the N01 road between Kiev and Znamyanka. A contract for providing technical assistance and supervision services during the rehabilitation of an 80.4-kilometer (approximately 50 mile) segment of the M01 highway connecting the country’s capital to the northern border with Belarus has been signed by the end of last year. Construction is scheduled to start during the first quarter of 2016. Both N01 and M01 roads are part of pan-European transport corridors.
