Ten Operators Deployed Openwave Mobility’s NFV Solutions in 12 Months

Exponential growth in data and mobile video is driving operators to virtualize their networks in 2018

REDWOOD CITY, Calif – February 27 2018 – Openwave Mobility, the market leader in mobile data traffic management solutions, today announced that ten operators have deployed its NFV-based solutions in the past 12 months. This includes customers from North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa and the Far East, bringing an additional 380 million end-users to Openwave Mobility’s subscriber base. The NFV deployments were primarily based on GiLAN.

To manage the demand for mobile video and boost Quality of Experience (QoE), most of these operators deployed Openwave Mobility’s Virtualized Network Function (VNF) for real-time encrypted video traffic management. The momentum with Tier 1 operators in particular has been significant with Orange, Vodafone, and Zain all publicly announcing deployments of Openwave Mobility’s VNF for Video Traffic Management. One tier-one Middle Eastern operator that deployed this VNF has dramatically cut video stall times by over 30 percent.

John Giere, President and CEO of Openwave Mobility said: “We recently conducted a detailed study on the practical considerations for successful deployment of NFV architecture. The positive news from the study is that VNFs with very specific use cases are providing the early ROI from NFV deployments. Given the explosive growth of mobile video, deploying our VNF for real-time encrypted video traffic management has represented one of the most timely and productive elements in several operators’ NFV journey.”

According to ABI Research, the NFV market will reach $38 Billion by 2022. Dimitris Mavrakis, Research Director, Strategic Technology, ABI Research said: “Telcos are currently deploying NFV in their own distinct ways. Some are dipping their toes with an appliance approach with VNFs before they take the full NFV plunge while others adopt a platform strategy that addresses the long term evolution of the network.”

Summarizing some of the study’ findings, John Giere will be speaking at MWC 2018 on the “The Hunt for mass-market NFV” and will share findings from the study. The session take place on Tuesday, February 27 11.00 – 12.10 at Hall 4 Auditorium 5.
