New Case Study Tracks Cloud Evolution of Leading Premium Manufacturer of Automobiles and Motorcycles

PORTLAND, Ore., April 6, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA) today published a case study titled, “BMW Group: Cloud Adoption Story.” Learn how the BMW Group evolved towards a private cloud to automate the provisioning of infrastructure.

For more than four years, the IT department for BMW Group used various iterations of cloud computing but then set up its own private cloud for the automatic handling of infrastructure resources via a self-service portal. With deep integration into the existing technical and process landscape, developers and other authorized stakeholders who needed a server or an application could log on to the portal, specify what they needed, and have a virtual machine (VM) created with all the proper rights, licenses, and applications.

As part of the strategic redesign, BMW Group IT embraced a lean start-up mode instead of its traditional waterfall approach and focused on several assumptions:
Internal customers need a more agile environment in which to deploy infrastructure.

  • A broadly used API is essential.
  • To start, internal customers need IaaS without complex combinations.
  • Process integration is not necessary at the beginning.
  • The main use cases would be continuous integration (CI) environments.

The BMW Group IT department selected the OpenStack framework for cloud management and tapped an OpenStack distributor to deliver professional services and additional management features.

In the end, it was possible to automatically create what had previously been done manually. Because the process was fully automated, it was faster and cheaper and had perfectly reproducible results.
