Natural Power appoints Offshore Services Lead in North America

Leading renewable energy consultancy and service provider Natural Power has appointed Matthew Filippelli as Principal Engineer and Offshore Services Lead. He will be based in the New York office located in Saratoga Springs.

Jim Adams, President of Natural Power in North America, said: “The US has a vast offshore wind energy resource, and as this market continues to gather pace, it is important that we prioritize expanding our team and expertise to meet the needs of our clients and the market at large. The US energy sector has a rich skills base, with decades of experience in developing ocean energy infrastructure, and we are delighted to welcome Matt to the team to lead our business in this area.”

Matt joins Natural Power from UL Renewables (formerly AWS Truepower) where he spent the last 16 years, most recently as Director of Offshore Services and Principal Engineer. Since 2003, he has supported the initiation and growth of the US offshore wind industry through commercial advisory services and diverse research and development projects. Outside of North America, he has worked to develop and implement offshore business strategies for both new and established markets.

From a technical perspective, his experience includes wind resource and energy yield assessment; meteorology and ocean (metocean) monitoring, modelling, and analysis; onshore and offshore wind turbine technology; instrumentation, data acquisition and communications; lidar, floating lidar, and sodar remote sensing; data analysis, meso-scale and CFD flow modelling. Matt also participates in several wind industry working groups related to offshore wind site characterization and turbine design, including the IEC 61400-15 Wind Resource and Site Assessment standards working group and the AWEA Offshore Wind Technical Advisory Panel.

In addition to his experience in the offshore wind sector, Matt has also provided bankable technical due diligence and pre-construction renewable energy advisory services for projects across North America.

Matt earned his Bachelor of Science in 2002 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a dual degree in Aeronautical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. He is currently working towards a Masters in Science in Mechanical Engineering.

On joining Natural Power, Matt said: “The US wind market has reached a turning point for offshore development. I am excited to work with my new US and global colleagues to help deliver on the enormous potential in state and federal waters. We are well-positioned to help the industry and its stakeholders realize their project development, economic growth, and clean energy deployment goals.”

Natural Power in North America
The team of experienced wind industry veterans at Natural Power reviewed more than a third of new wind assets in the USA on behalf of clients in 2017 and has continued to expand across the US with offices in New York and Seattle. The business provides asset management services on more 5GW of renewable energy projects, equivalent to the top three US wind owners by capacity (according to AWEA 2015 Market Report figures). Its approach to ‘total asset management’ on operational projects includes a range of services for owners and financiers alike, including local site management and balance of plant services, advanced performance engineering analysis, remote monitoring services, and operational reporting and analysis.
