STATE COLLEGE, Pa., June 8, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — EnergyCAP software developers Jared Matthews and Terry Yoder thought they were just helping out with a local charity event in State College, PA, but they ended up winning an all-expense-paid golfing trip to Pebble Beach, CA.
On Tuesday, June 7, EnergyCAP, Inc. chipped in half the registration fee to send a group of eight golfers to the local Audi quattro Cup tournament, held at the Toftrees Golf Resort & Conference Center in State College, Pennsylvania.
This event serves as a feeder to the larger international Audi quattro Cup tournament, the largest amateur golf tournament series in the world, and is also a fundraiser for the YMCA of Centre County. Golfers who want to compete in the tournament must have a registered handicap. In a bit of serendipity, Matthews and Yoder, who had never played together before, both had registered handicaps.
Yoder said he didn’t realize until the morning of the tournament that the winners could play in the U.S. tournament finals at Pebble Beach near Monterrey, CA.
Despite blowing an early hole, the duo ended up with a raw score of 11 over par for their day at the golf course. Alternating shots throughout the tournament, they managed to par 13 holes, and this performance, scored with Greensome Stableford handicap scoring rules, was sufficient to propel them to first place in the local tournament.
Though the two didn’t know it, the tournament prize was an all-expense paid trip to Pebble Beach, CA, this August where they will compete in the next stage of the tournament playing both Pebble Beach and Spyglass—two of the best-known and most challenging golf courses in the country.
Yoder said that neither he nor Matthews expected to finish near the top of the field (there were 10 other qualifying pairs). “Hearing our names called during dinner was a shock!” said Yoder. “I still was not quite sure what we had won exactly, except for a couple of golf bags. My friends from EnergyCAP had to keep reassuring me that indeed we were going to Pebble Beach.” Matthews’ reaction was similar: “I left when the tournament was over before they even announced winners,” he said. “I knew we did pretty well, but still didn’t think we had a chance of winning. On the ride home I received a phone call from a friend telling me we had won. It took him about five minutes to convince me this wasn’t a joke. I’ve dreamed of playing Pebble Beach for years. Never thought it would ever come true!”
In California, their competition will be other winning pairs from more than 80 locations across the United States. The winning team will represent the United States in the quattro World Cup final in Barcelona, Spain, in October.
Yoder says he is already getting mentally prepared for the next round of competition. “Jared and I need to get some Rosetta Stone courses on Spanish,” he said, “because after we win at Pebble, we are going to the World competition in Barcelona, Spain. All expenses paid, of course!”
